Victoria Falls

“Mosi-oa-Tunya”

The spectacular Victoria Falls are located in the extreme south of Zambia and western Zimbabwe, forming a natural border between the two countries. In both states, near the falls, there is a village with accommodation, shopping and an airport: Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). At a width of about 1.7 kilometers, the mighty masses of the Zambezi rush down to a depth of 110 meters, leaving behind a spray that rises up to 500 meters and can sometimes be seen 60 kilometers further. The locals call the falls "Mosi-oa-tunya" (The smoke that thunders).

The Victoria Falls are known for their extraordinary panoramas, lush green surroundings and the mighty waters that you will see during a visit. Parallel to the falls runs a small rainforest, and there is also a nearly 1,500 year old, gigantic baobab tree with a circumference of 16 meters and a height of 20 meters.

The best travel time is of course always dependent on your wishes and imagination!

Between February and July there is "flood time" with its peak between March and April. During these months, up to 500 million liters per minute fall down the rock walls. The water of the Zambezi River rises by up to 1 meter, which in turn leads to a rise of 5 meters in the gorge. The spray / rainfall of the falls is very dense at this time of the year, soaking wet and surrounded by thick rainbows, which partly limits visibility and makes taking photos rather difficult. You should also pay attention to the right clothes or wear a raincoat. All the more impressive at this time is the sight of a helicopter from the air.

Low water level occurs between August and January and is lowest between November and early December. At this time, the spray / rain of the falls is low and visitors can see the geological formation of the falls in full length and width. The water in the gorge goes back and the Zambezi River lives up to its reputation as the best white water rafting destination.

From October, only about 20 million liters per minute flow, which is why mostly naked rock faces can be seen. But worth the hike along the edge of the demolition to Livingstone Iceland.

Note: During the low water level, the sight of falls on the Zimbabwe side is more impressive, especially in the months of October, November, December, when the rain did not make much of a difference

If you especially want to take good pictures and keep dry clothes, then the months of July, August and September are recommended. If you want to experience the colossal falls in all their splendor, you should come between February and May.
